ICOA X MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMANY: APPALACHIAN SPRING

You are invited to ICOA’s upcoming performance of the classic Appalachian Spring with the renowned Martha Graham Dance Company on December 8th. The show was once referred to by The New York Times, as “shining and joyous” and a “testimony to the simple fineness of the human spirit”, and the IOCA is honored to be a part of this performance.

Deeply rooted in American history, Aaron Copland and Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring was a joint project commissioned by the Library of Congress, and first premiered in 1944, with Graham dancing the lead role. Inspired by raw human emotion and the Appalachian style, Graham’s choreography was designed to highlight the excitement and struggles of everyday life in Appalachia. Copland also won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his celebrated score.

This is the ICOA’s first collaboration with Martha Graham Dance Company's Graham 2 and we are humbled to work with a world-class dance company to provide emerging artists from both groups an opportunity to perform this revered American classic.

The ICOA is dedicated to reimagining classical music in the 21st century. Our community of musicians creates revolutionary live performances through the inclusion of visual and dramatic arts, as well as cutting-edge technology. Through our immersive approach to the arts, we provide a deeper way to experience classical music.
